Frequently Asked Questions

Passport Renewal Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Dual Citizenship and Dual Passports

Question: I am now an American/British citizen and have an American/British passport. Can I ALSO have a Sierra Leonean passport without violating the laws of the U.S. , UK or Sierra Leone?

Answer: Both the U.S. and UK allow you to be a holder of their passport in addition to being a holder of a passport from another country under the following circumstances:

1)      You were born in that country but later became a U.S. or UK citizen;

2)      Your parents were born in the country in question which automatically makes you eligible for a passport from that country.

Click on the hyperlinks below from the U.S. Department of State and the UK Home Office website that deal with this topic and also the Sierra Leone Amendment that allowed dual citizenship. We strongly advise you to contact the appropriate office below to verify this information or contact an immigration lawyer as we are not legal advisers.

Finally, please note that most other countries have similar rules on this topic.

Question: Why is it so expensive to renew a Sierra Leonean passport?

Answer: The bulk of the cost to renew a passport is related to the cost of using the most secure form of postage available when posting outside the country.  To guarantee delivery of your renewed passport, it is imperative that we use the most reliable form of postage available when mailing the renewed passport from Freetown to your address outside Sierra Leone. Because we realize that the cost of postage may make renewals cost prohibitive for some of our clients, we have created an inexpensive option for them that covers only the cost of renewing the passport and delivering it to an address in Freetown. Please visit the passport page for more details on this option.

Question: I lost my passport and would like to replace it. What do I need to do?

Answer: First of all you need to file a police report in the location you lost your passport and send us a copy of the police report filed. In addition, you need to give us as much information as possible about the passport you lost such as the passport number, date of issue, date of expiration, etc. If you have a photocopy of the first five pages of the passport that would be ideal. (It is highly recommended that everyone holding a passport makes copies of the first five pages and store it in a separate location from the passport in case it gets lost). Finally, you need to provide all the other information necessary to renew a passport which can be found on our website.

Question: I need my passport within a shorter time frame than the expedited service time of 7 to 10 days that I see on your website. Is it possible for me to get my passport earlier than the expedited service time of 7 to 10 days?

Answer: Our expedited passport orders are processed as quickly as possible throughout the renewal process. However, the Sierra Leone Passport Office in Freetown is the ultimate authority on Sierra Leonean passports although we must mention that to date they have been very understanding whenever there is a rush order. In addition, getting the new passport to your address outside Sierra Leone is dependent on the schedule of the express mail service from Sierra Leone. Given these two issues that are beyond our control, we cannot promise that passports will be ready and available sooner than the 7 to 10 days window. Keep in mind, however, that we have been able to process AND deliver passports to the US in as little as 4 days but given the afore-mentioned reasons we cannot guarantee such a quick turnaround in all cases.

Question: I have never had a Sierra Leonean passport before and would like to get one now. Can you help me to get it? If not, why can’t you help me?

Answer: Unfortunately we do not process passports for individuals who have never had a Sierra Leonean passport before. This is due to the fact that a passport is an international security and identification document with a lot of potential for fraud. As a result, we ask that all potential clients obtain their first passport directly from the Government of Sierra Leone and have us handle all their subsequent renewals.

Question: I know you do not process passports for people who have never had a Sierra Leonean passport before as stated above. However, can you tell me what documents I need in order to get a passport for the first time from the Government of Sierra Leone?

Answer: You need to provide to the Sierra Leone passport office in Freetown documentation validating your citizenship and occupation such as:

1)      Birth Certificate

2)      Transcript

3)      Letter from your school

4)      Letter from your employer etc.

Please contact your local embassy to verify all the information you may need to provide as well as forms required and the process for submitting an application for a new passport.
